The title of this post could have also been "OFF for a better ON".
This, as usual on TED's, is a very relevant talk, from Stefan Sagmeister.
I think this demonstration is excellent and self sufficiant to explain that personal free time is not spare but necessary time for a better doing and accomplishment (meaning happiness and recognition more than performance).
Linked to that, I would pick the definition he gave of work split in 3 gradual notions :
1 Job
2 Carreer
3 Calling
Open your eyes, take the time, enjoy

Swine Flue - Grippe porcine - H1N1

Hi all,
just a quick one to say how much i'm iritated by the government policy concerning swin flu. Indeed an epidemy could slow down economy if it comes all at once, but putting the population through such a psychose of death to avoid that is immoral !
Because its just a flu after all, much milder than the avian flu for instance. And also because except economical slowdown the other shameful reason is boosting pharmacetical lobbing.
The truth is with proper higiene and a visit at the doc, no reason to fear more than some usual fever and nose running... Not to mention the dangerous side effects of the vaccination.
So i feel its important to counterbalance official communication by giving you this article from a more serious source, national nurse association in france :
http://www.syndicat-infirmier.com/Vaccination-H1N1-mefiance-des.html

City One Minutes - live the world simultaneously

Hello everybody, a quick post today,
here is a very interesting website called CityOneMinutes, which features one minute videos of the main cities in the world. First interest is that these are local artists' that give an insight on their culture. Secondly the interface allows you to browse through space and time in this large video material.
As a consequence you can have a glance at what's happening in cairo and budapest at the same time !
Here is the link - good experience !

Innovation = future = preserving our planet
The LIFT conference is a series of events built around a community of pioneers who get together in Europe and Asia to explore the social implications of new technologies. Latest venue is held in Korea. Note that it's supported by french R&D survey company FING (Fondation Internet Nouvelle Generation).
Dennis Pamlin, who is Global Policy Advisor for the WWF, introduces the ecological challenges we face and contrast them with most of the technological progresses. His talk delineates a set of filters to understand how to judge innovation, linking with the long-term consequences it might have on the planet.

Education - la méthode finlandaise // Mindmapping for a better teaching
In english now : in France our educational system is very classical and courses done in a magistral way : teacher writes down main topics and pupils take notes in a linear way, then learn them by heart and repeat them at the test.
Problem is this system doesn't leave any room for personnal interpretation and dialogue with the teacher. Thus most children don't feat in this system (specialy today with attention span droping dramatically from 45 min to 15!).
Finns define primary school as "comprehensive school" and have a very different approach which appear to be the best for 10 years in every topic ! They teach mindmapping technics to the pupils so they can organise ideas and things they learn as they understand them. Mindmapping offers a much more modular way to archive knowledge and thus make it easier to understand and memorise information.

Obama to Luther King - yet another "Yes we can"
Here is a 40min discours by Barack Obama to the NAACP (most influencial right defender association since 100 years in USA), concerning racial issue regarding american values and today's politics.
I found it as usual very just and touching, but unusually putting the light on the president's views on race issues. As a matter of fact Obama didn't talk much about this issue during the elections, as he was probably afraid to take too much side for a community and risk to miss a concensius, which i can understand. But truth is that he could have tried the shot, in my opinion his vision of this is very relevant once more, as it puts in perspective all american values and the very definition of the american dream ! He takes care not to seperate colored communities in fight against present system, but reafirms american values that can help them integrate better, and reassure them that on the other side government is legiferating in the same direction.
No more say, see for yourself :::

Mars & Venus, we are from different species - Sci Facts !

Men and women have always had hard time to communicate, understand eachother and so on.
This article (french source) tells you what you felt and couldnt put words on, and some other things you didnt even consider i'm sure (for exemple women hear 2.3 times as loud as men ! Theregoes they attach much more importance to the tone than us!).
It's a excellent reading for everyone for a better understanding of eachother !
Serge Ginger shrine, does so by defining main moods, pyschological characteristics and attitudes considering genes, congenital and educationnal aspects for each genre.
There you go have fun reading :
